Sound Chat Radio CEO Chin Gives DJ Roy His Flowers

When Someone Deserves Their Flowers, Give Them While They’re Here to Smell Them When I tell you, when I saw this post from Garfield “Chin” Bourne of Sound Chat Radio, my heart skipped a beat.

Nothing is more powerful than recognizing people for their contributions while they are still here to receive the love, respect and appreciation they have earned. We salute Chin for making it loud and clear just how important our veteran broadcasters are to New York City’s Caribbean media landscape.

And let’s be clear: you cannot talk about Caribbean broadcasting and Caribbean radio in New York City without mentioning DJ Roy.

DJ Roy has been a respected voice and presence in the Caribbean music and broadcasting community for decades. His work has helped support reggae, dancehall, Caribbean music and culture, while creating opportunities and connections for artists, broadcasters and members of the community.

That is why Chin’s recognition of DJ Roy matters.

It is also consistent with Chin’s own long-standing emphasis on honoring pioneers and veterans while they are still here. In connection with Sound Chat Radio and Irish and Chin, Garfield “Chin” Bourne has publicly championed the importance of recognizing Jamaican music veterans and their contributions to the culture. Jamaica recognizing his contribution and support to urban and Caribbean culture, reggae and dancehall is something worth celebrating. I cannot independently confirm all details of the Jamaica honor from the sources I reviewed here, but the recognition is certainly consistent with DJ Roy’s documented longstanding involvement in Caribbean broadcasting and music culture.

So whenever you see DJ Roy outside, give that man a hug. Shake his hand. Tell him congratulations. Tell him you appreciate him.

Because we have to stop waiting until people are gone to tell them what they meant to us.
