Jamaican reggae artist takes fans from Ethiopia to Jamaica in powerful visual arriving August 20

Protoje is giving fans an early look at the upcoming video for “1000 Lashes,” featuring Stephen “Ragga” Marley, ahead of its official release on Thursday, August 20.

The Jamaican reggae artist recently shared a preview of the visual, offering a glimpse into a production that connects Ethiopian history, African identity and Jamaica’s rich musical heritage.

Parts of the video were filmed throughout Ethiopia, including at the Museum of the Battle of Adwa, which commemorates Ethiopia’s historic victory over a European colonial power and its preservation of sovereignty.

The location adds historical weight to a song that addresses issues affecting communities and children, while reflecting Protoje’s socially conscious approach to songwriting.

The video also captures scenes from different parts of Ethiopia before the story returns to Jamaica.

One of the most notable Jamaican locations featured in the production is 56 Hope Road, the legendary site associated with Bob Marley. Protoje and Stephen Marley were filmed together on the iconic steps, bringing the visual back to Jamaica and its reggae legacy.

A meaningful collaboration

“1000 Lashes” marks a collaboration between Protoje and Stephen Marley, an artist Protoje has identified as one of his major musical influences.

That connection gives the project an added significance, with the two artists coming together on a song that explores themes of hardship, inequality, community and the experiences of younger generations.

The upcoming visual builds on those themes by placing the song against locations with deep historical and cultural significance.

Ethiopia meets Jamaica

The decision to film in Ethiopia gives “1000 Lashes” a visual identity that extends beyond a traditional music video.

From the historic Battle of Adwa site to the streets and landscapes of Ethiopia, and ultimately the legendary steps of 56 Hope Road in Jamaica, the production creates a connection between African history and the Jamaican musical tradition.

Protoje described the opportunity to work with Stephen Marley as a special one, while also expressing his appreciation for being able to incorporate Ethiopia's history into the project.

Fans have already been given an early glimpse of what is to come, but the full official video for “1000 Lashes” featuring Stephen Marley arrives Thursday, August 20, 2026.

For now, the preview offers a taste of a visual that promises to pair Protoje’s conscious reggae with powerful imagery spanning Ethiopia and Jamaica.

The full story unfolds August 20.
