The global reggae community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Stephen “Cat” Coore, legendary Jamaican musician, composer, and co-founder of the iconic band Third World. Coore died on Sunday evening, leaving behind a powerful musical legacy that spans more than five decades.
Born on April 6, 1956, Coore dedicated his life to music, becoming one of Jamaica’s most respected and influential artists. As a founding member and musical director of Third World, he helped define the band’s signature sound, a groundbreaking fusion of reggae, soul, funk, pop, and rock that introduced Jamaican music to audiences around the world.

Under his musical leadership, Third World rose to international prominence with timeless classics such as “Now That We’ve Found Love,” “96 Degrees in the Shade,” and “Try Jah Love.” The band went on to become one of Jamaica’s longest-running and most successful musical groups, earning global acclaim while staying rooted in Caribbean culture and consciousness.
Before forming Third World, Coore was briefly part of Inner Circle, but his vision expanded when he joined forces with keyboardist Ibo Cooper to create a band that would push reggae beyond traditional boundaries. That vision not only reshaped reggae-fusion but also opened doors for countless artists who followed.
Widely admired for his exceptional musicianship, Coore was both a gifted guitarist and cellist, known for his deep musical knowledge, compositional brilliance, and ability to blend genres seamlessly. More than a performer, he was regarded as a cultural ambassador, representing Jamaican excellence on the world stage and inspiring generations of musicians at home and abroad.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Jamaican culture and the creative arts, Coore was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Government of Jamaica — a fitting honor for a man whose work helped elevate the nation’s musical identity globally.
Stephen “Cat” Coore is survived by his wife Lisa, his children Shiah, Kanna, Stephen, and Ashley, his grandchildren, extended family, bandmates, colleagues, and countless fans worldwide who continue to feel the impact of his artistry.
Though he may be gone, his music and the spirit he infused into reggae will live on forever.

🕊️ Rest in power, Cat Coore. Your legacy echoes through every note.
