We sat down with Crown Hill Theatre owner Peter Tulloch to address the growing controversy surrounding the title theft allegations involving him and the theater. Hear his side of the story in this exclusive interview done with Blondie
❓For those who may not know you, can you introduce yourself and explain your role at Crown Hill Theatre?
My name is Peter Tulloch. I am the founder and operator of Crown Hill Theatre in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I established the theatre in 2023 to provide a welcoming home for artists, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, educators, and community organizations. My role is to manage the theatre, develop programming, and create a space where the community can gather for cultural, educational, and civic events.
There have been public allegations regarding ownership of the building where Crown Hill Theatre operates. What is your response to those claims?
These allegations disappoint me and confuse me. Crown Hill has been a central part of the community since its opening. Here is the deal-I do not own the building. I've never claimed to own the building. I am a tenant. As a tenant I operate under a lease. Anyone with a fair interest in the theatre's ownership history should look into the public records. The records align with what I've said.
❓Can you clarify your relationship to the property? Are you the owner, landlord, tenant, or operator of the theater?
I am the tenant and operator of Crown Hill Theatre. I lease the space legally and operate an independent business there.
❓What documentation exists to support your legal right to operate Crown Hill Theatre at this location?
Like tens of thousands of small business folks in Brooklyn I have a lease.A commercial lease. You know the city. It takes a lot to get a lot to establish a business properly, and I did everything.
❓When did you first become involved with the building, and whatcondition was it in when you leased the space?
I became involved in 2023 when I entered into a lease agreement. At the time, the space required substantial work to tr7ansform it into a functioning theatre and community venue. We invested considerable time, resources, and effort to create a welcoming environment for the neighborhood.
❓What investments, renovations, and improvements have you made to the theater since taking over the lease?
We renovated the interior, upgraded lighting and sound systems, improved seating and presentation areas, and transformed the space into a functioning cultural venue. Beyond the physical improvements, we've invested in programming that has brought artists, nonprofit organizations, educational forums, and community events into Crown Heights.
❓Some people have accused you personally of being involved in deed theft. What evidence, if any, have you seen to support those allegations?
These allegations are false and I am deeply disappointed and confused by them.More than this I'm offended. What's the evidence for these allegations? I have not been presented with any of it. And there is a reason-no evidence exists.Look-I have never owned this property, never possessed its deed, and have never been accused by any governmental authority or court of stealing or unlawfully obtaining ownership of the building.
❓How have these accusations affected your business, your reputation, and the artists and organizations that use the venue?
The impact has been significant. We've experienced canceled events, lost revenue, reputational damage, and concerns from artists and organizations who
have been exposed to conflicting information. Some prospective clients have told us they were contacted and urged not to hold events at the theatre. Despite these challenges, many community members continue to support us, and we remain committed to serving Brooklyn.
❓Have any lawsuits, court rulings, or official findings ever determined that you stole a deed or unlawfully obtained ownership of the property?
No. Again, I am a tenant, not the owner. There has never been a court finding or official determination that I stole a deed or unlawfully obtained ownership of this property.
❓What would you say to people who have heard the allegations but have not looked at the public records for themselves?
I would encourage everyone to look at the facts and review publicly available records before reaching conclusions. It's important to distinguish between allegations, opinions, and documented facts.
❓Have you attempted to communicate directly with your critics or those making the accusations?
Our focus has been on continuing to serve the community while responding through factual public statements and educational forums. We have consistently encouraged respectful dialogue and believe disagreements should be addressed through lawful processes rather than intimidation or misinformation.
❓What impact has this controversy had on the community events, cultural programs, and partnerships hosted at Crown Hill Theatre?
The controversy has affected scheduled programming and some partnerships. However,it has also strengthened our commitment to community engagement. Our recent Town Hall brought together attorneys, real estate professionals, homeowners, and residents for a thoughtful discussion about deed theft awareness, estate planning, and homeowner protections, demonstrating the positive role the theatre can continue to play.
❓Why do you believe these allegations continue to circulate despite your public statements?
I cannot speak to other people's motivations. What I can say is that once misinformation enters the public conversation, it can be difficult to correct.
That's why we remain committed to transparency, documentation, and open dialogue with the community.
❓What message would you like to send to artists, promoters, andcommunity members who may be uncertain about supporting Crown Hill Theatre?
I have nothing to hide. They should reach out to me. Crown Hill remains a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for the community. We invite people to visit, ask questions, review the facts, and judge us based on the work we are doing to support artists, nonprofits, and neighborhood organizations.
❓Looking ahead, what are your plans for Crown Hill Theatre and itsrole in the Brooklyn community?
We plan to continue expanding our cultural programming while also serving as a resource for the community. Following our recent Town Hall, we intend to host additional educational forums on topics such as homeowner protection, estate planning, financial literacy, and community development. Our goal is for Crown Hill Theatre to remain a place where creativity,,education, and civic engagement come together to strengthen Brooklyn
