Dancehall icon Mavado is officially a free man, and he’s celebrating in more ways than one.
After several years abroad, the Gully Gad made a surprise return to Jamaica this week, marking the end of a long-running legal chapter. The 2018 warrant for his arrest has been dropped, clearing the way for his long-awaited homecoming.
The move comes with double joy, as Mavado has also reunited with his son Dantay Brooks, whose 2021 life sentence for murder was overturned earlier this year by the Court of Appeal. Dantay was just 18 at the time of the conviction, which stemmed from a 2018 incident in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew. With the case now behind them, the Brooks family is finally breathing easy again.
Sources close to the entertainer say Mavado is elated to put the legal troubles behind him and even more thrilled to reconnect with his son. The mood around him has been nothing short of pure happiness as he looks toward a new chapter in his life and career.
And yes, the celebration continues, Mavado is gearing up for a major performance in Jamaica this December. Details are still under wraps, but word is it will be a huge event marking his return to the local stage just in time for his 44th birthday on November 30.
Born and raised in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew, Mavado real name David Brooks, rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with breakout hits like Real McKoy, Weh Dem A Do, and So Special. His debut album Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks (2007) earned critical acclaim and positioned him as one of dancehall’s most defining voices.
From dominating the Gully vs. Gaza era alongside Vybz Kartel to signing with major international labels like VP Records, We the Best Music Group, and Cash Money Records, Mavado has remained one of Jamaica’s most globally recognized artists. He’s also collaborated with superstars such as Jay-Z, Akon, and Nicki Minaj, solidifying his place in dancehall history.
Now, with his name cleared and his family reunited, Mavado is stepping back into the spotlight stronger than ever. Jamaica can expect something unforgettable this December, a true homecoming celebration for the Gully Gad.
